I've found this splendid Dutch album in Peter Richter's collection, which shares 43 items with mine. There's some distinct quality in many Dutch art rock / prog releases since the early 70's, which made bands like "Focus" and "Kayak" so popular. Like those legends, "Lunar Clock" creates melodic, symphonic rock with layered keyboards and exquisite guitars, carrying on the great tradition. As an example, listen to the guitar solo in the 2nd half of the last track. Yeah, that's genuinely Dutch!

The guitarist is obviously influenced by Steve Howe. There's even a quote of a little musical riff from Close to the Edge in Empress, which makes me smile. But please don't get the impression that they are some sort of Yes copycat. Not at all. Emperor Norton very much have their own sound. I find that one of the common downfalls for modern prog bands is vocals that can't rise to the level of the music. I am happy to say that that is not the case here. The vocalist has a distinctive sound with tons of power, at times approaching operatic. I'm really looking forward to hearing more from this band.

The new live EP by Ryan W. Stevenson's project reminded me, that this debut album must have been gone down the wishlist... If instrumental Canterbury stuff is your thing, this should be a no-brainer. Firmly rooted in the past (late 60s, 70s), nevertheless with a fresh sound. Guests incude The Tangent's Andy Tillison and Soft Machine's Theo Travis.
