I - In the Desert

1991, the Gulf War after the Desert Storm
A Humvee crossing Highway 80
It stops after detecting a contact from an unknown device
A soldier exits the vehicle and reports that event
This is what he thinks he saw:

“In the desert
I saw a creature,
naked,
bestial,

Who, squatting upon the ground,
Held his heart
in his hands,
And ate of it.”

He could identify him
As an enemy soldier
But completely disfigured
Aching and suffering
In pain and distress

“I said,
“Is it good, friend?”
“It is bitter - bitter,”
he answered

And then the creature
With a scary harsh voice
Slowly and grievously, said:

“But I like it
“Because it is bitter,
“And because
it is my heart.”

We need to stop
To hate each other
Because of a god, a book or a symbol of faith
God is not here, and He will never be
